Colourism

People are judged more preferentially the lighter their skin tone.

Myself and Art Director Anthony Smith helped create and Creatively Direct
this exhibition to highlight the issue of Colourism, with Black History Month and Arts Council England.

The videos were my first attempt at filmmaking... and ended up being shown in venues across the south of England,
including libraries, bookshops, Solent University and Southampton General Hospital!

Brown Paper Bag Test

We encouraged visitors to take the ‘Brown Paper Bag Test’.
This was a 20th century African American discriminatory practice where an individual’s skin tone
was compared to the colour of a brown paper bag… to determine their privileges.

You were only allowed to enter certain establishments
if your skin tone matched or was lighter than a brown paper bag...
